The Artist Says:
“Garnayirri is a Gooniyandi word meaning River Junction—a place where waterways meet, carrying stories, memories and life across Country. It is a place of movement, gathering and renewal, where different paths come together while remaining deeply connected to their source.
The flowing turquoise river that winds through the centre of the artwork represents the enduring power of water. It reminds us that rivers are living entities, shaping the landscape over generations and sustaining all who rely on them. Like the river, our lives are constantly moving, adapting and finding new directions, yet we remain connected to Country, family and culture.
The surrounding circles represent waterholes, camps and places of significance along the river system. Each holds its own stories and knowledge, connected through the branching pathways that symbolise the relationships between people, communities and Country. These pathways speak to the journeys our ancestors travelled and the connections that continue to guide us today.
Layered contemporary patterns evoke the textures and colours of the Kimberley landscape—its earth, grasses, stone and water. Together they reflect the richness, diversity and resilience of Country, where every mark contributes to a greater story.
Garnayirri – River Junction celebrates the strength found in connection. It is a reflection on the power of rivers to bring people together, nourish life and carry the wisdom of generations, reminding us that, like water, we are strongest when we flow together.
